Webb's Depth of Knowledge and technology Use

11/22/2015

You may have come across this image or others like it online that appear to be a one stop resource guide when it comes to integrating technology with Webb's Depth of Knowledge, as well as, the SAMR model.

I would highly encourage you NOT to use it as your guide. Why you ask?

Placing Apps or Web 2.0 tools into one category or level goes against meaningful technology integration.

What a teacher or student DOES with the App/Web tool defines the SAMR or DOK level.

The document linked below does a great job of taking each level of DOK and providing examples of technology integration. They do not list Apps or sites, simply suggested skills that coincide the DOK.
Technology Integration with DOK-Depth of Knowledge Explained
The two videos below are great introductions to Webb's Depth of Knowledge if you are not familiar with it or need a review.
This video is great because it demonstrates DOK in an ELA classroom at the middle school level.
Dan Meyer's TED Talk below discusses the importance of digging deeper in mathematics utilizing real life activities to approach levels 3 and 4 DOK. A must watch whether you teach math or not.

Plan high quality lessons with technology

Classrooms are transitioning quickly to digital learning environments. Teachers spend hours scouring the web to locate digital resources to use within their lessons. And with the integration of technology, student engagement no doubt increases.
However, the key to a high-quality lesson is not simply “adding technology.” It’s about what the technology adds to the delivery and overall understanding of the content. This is the notion of being a content curator.
Integrating technology still requires the lesson plan follows best practices. This means it should include introduction, instruction, interaction, assessment, and extension components. Below you will find a variety of sites and resources tied to each lesson-plan component.

Picture
INTRODUCTION:  Engage and excite the learner with a lesson hook. Help students understand the focus of the lesson and/or connect new content to known content. This may include sharing a video clip, digital image, or a parody of a popular song rewritten about a standard.
  • YouTube/TeacherTube
  • Flocabulary
  • Pinterest
Picture
INSTRUCTION:  This is the I-do portion of the gradual release model. The teacher should provide direct and explicit instruction and model thinking/activities. The following sites provide powerful digital curriculum that include relevant text, images, videos, links and/or directions for various concepts of study.
  • Curriculet
  • Actively Learn
  • Power My Learning *
  • CK-12 *
  • Learn Zillion *
  • Educreations
  • Curriki
  • SAS Curriculum Pathways
  • Read Write Think
  • OpenEd *
Picture
INTERACTION/ACTIVITY:  A portion of the lesson must include students interact and engaging with the content. They cannot just read or watch the teacher. This is the student-centered We-do portion of the lesson. Include at least one of the following types:
  • Student-Student Interaction—Students can collaborate on projects, in discussions, etc. using Today’s Meet, Google Docs, and Tri-cider.
  • Student-Teacher Interaction—The teacher can provide quality feedback to students using Google: Classroom, Docs, Form
  • Student-Content Interaction—Students engage with the content and/or resources using Video Notes, Zaption, EdPuzzle, QR Codes, Turtle Diary, Interactive Sites…
Picture
ASSESSMENT:  Evaluate the Learner and drive future instruction with formative and/or summative assessments. These can include a variety of options, depending on the devices available in your classroom.
  • Smartphone/Tablet -- Plickers
  • Lab/Cart— Kahoot, PearDeck, Google Forms

EXTENSIONS:  Provide support for both struggling and advanced learners.  Look within the sites that were mentioned within the Introduction and Instruction components for additional resources to utilize.
  • Math -AdaptedMind (need to create login)
  • Math-Matific (need to create login)
  • Reading/Math-Turtle Diary
